April 14, 2026 — Publix honored Publix Charities Executive Director John Doran with a 2026 Mr. George Community Service Award at the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting.
John is dedicated to helping others in his community, and his work benefits several groups. He discovered his passion for volunteering at a young age. It blossomed into involvement with many organizations, such as Alliance for Independence (AFI), Lakeland Pigfest and the Bullard Family Foundation (BFF).
“We have the opportunity to do something and help others, and it’s our responsibility to do that,” said John. Growing up, his father instilled in him the importance of lending a hand and making an impact wherever he could.
John began volunteering with Lakeland Pigfest in the 1990s, since his father was part of the committee that started the organization. This annual barbecue contest raises funds for local charities. He served on the board of directors for seven years and continues to give his time and serves as a key point of contact during the event.
For nine years, John served on the board of directors at AFI, which provides specialized training for adults with intellectual disabilities. He also serves as a team lead for the BFF, which provides resources to support children and families in underserved communities in the Tampa Bay area.
“One of my most impactful moments was meeting a mother who arrived four hours early to a free vision, dental and medical care event after learning all appointments for the day were full. She was hoping her son could still receive care,” said John. “We were able to work her into the schedule that day since she had shown up so early. Watching her son receive his first pair of glasses free of charge and seeing her leave with tears of relief — it reminded me why this work matters.”
John believes that impact isn’t measured only by donations, but by the time and resources we contribute. He credits his years at Publix for equipping him with strategic thinking and team coordination that strengthen the Bullard Family Foundation’s mission and prolong its impact.
“I couldn’t do what I do for the Bullard Family Foundation without the time I spent at Publix — those years gave me strategic experience, coordination skills for teams and connections that continue to guide my work today,” said John.
John is humbled and grateful to receive the award.
“This award is one of the biggest honors I could have imagined, and it means so much to me,” said John. “I feel incredibly blessed that people would believe enough in me to recommend me for this award.”
