Oct. 25, 2024 — Publix Front Service Clerk Chris McDarby was named the Special Olympics Florida Athlete of the Year during the organization’s 2024 Champions Gala.

The award is given to an athlete who demonstrates leadership, dedication to teammates, sportsmanship and a commitment to helping others.

“We are proud of Chris for receiving this incredible honor from Special Olympics Florida,” said Publix Director of Community Relations Dwaine Stevens. “It’s a testament to his passion for serving his fellow Special Olympics athletes and his community.”

A dedicated Special Olympics athlete, Chris goes above and beyond to help other athletes reach their full potential. His kind, compassionate and welcoming nature is felt by those who interact with him every day.

Chris’ story

Chris began his Publix career over 12 years ago. His journey as an athlete was inspired by his late father, Bob McDarby, who volunteered as a coach for Special Olympics and went on to be Chris’ caddie and coach.

Today, Chris competes in track and field, bocce, bowling, tennis, swimming, basketball, soccer and golf. An accomplished athlete, he has competed in several events, including the USA Games and the Southeastern Invitational, and has won 50 medals.

Outside of Special Olympics, he participates in a local art program, where he explores his creative side, and volunteers at his local church.

Following this honor, Chris looks forward to continuing to strive to be a better athlete and prepare for his next event.
