LAKELAND, Fla., Oct. 20, 2026 — Publix has been named on the 2026 Best Workplaces in Retail list by Fortune, ranking No. 5 of the 20 best large retail workplaces. Associates say that the company’s support of its workers, its promote-from-within culture and commitment to the community are among the reasons they enjoy working for Publix.

Caring for associates

Publix is committed to supporting associates throughout their careers and investing in their overall well-being. As the largest employee-owned company in the country, Publix offers eligible associates the opportunity to become company owners through its employee stock ownership and employee stock purchase plans. 

With a strong emphasis on promoting from within, associates can start in entry-level positions and work their way up to management roles. The company provides training programs, tuition reimbursement and mentorship to help associates develop their skills and achieve their career goals.

Care for communities

Publix is dedicated to serving its neighbors in need and helping the environment. Twice a year, the company partners with its customers and associates during its Good Together hunger register campaign to donate fresh produce and nonperishable food items needed most by local food banks. Publix also donates food from its stores that is no longer salable but still safe for consumption through the Good Together food donation program. 

The company encourages its associates to serve their local communities during its two annual Publix Serves Weeks, one focused on hunger and the other on sustainability. Great Place to Work analyzed survey feedback representing more than 1 million employees working in the retail industry in the United States. Questions focused on their views on innovation, company values and the effectiveness of leaders.
