July 8, 2026 — Publix Special Olympics athletes continue to show their passion and dedication as they compete at the highest levels. One athlete, Danny Steele, brings years of experience and excels at a high level in Special Olympics events.
Meet Danny
Danny began his Publix career as a front service clerk in Ocoee, Florida, in 2022. He had a love for golf — once he started playing, he couldn’t put the clubs down. His journey with Special Olympics began nearly five years ago, and he continues to make an impact both on and off the course.
He placed fifth in golf at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games. During the competition, he made several friends while showcasing his talents. Danny is also known as a versatile athlete with experience in bowling and swimming.
“The most rewarding thing about watching Danny is how much he’s progressed,” said his father, Jim Steele. “His confidence, how he feels about himself, has just improved tremendously. I can’t tell you how proud I am to watch him at these events.”
Danny’s connection with Special Olympics Florida
Danny has dedicated a great deal of time to Special Olympics Florida, and he cherishes the relationships he’s built.
“I have autism, and I want to show the world that I can do anything,” Danny said.
Through his dedication, Danny serves as a role model; he has a growing social media presence and a strong desire to raise awareness for both Special Olympics and autism through his followers.
Danny is also a global messenger for Special Olympics Florida, serving as an ambassador for the organization and hoping to inspire others along the way.
“Danny has become a tremendous Athlete Leader, whose influence reaches far beyond the golf course,” said Meghan McLean, president and CEO of Special Olympics Florida. “He’s a terrific fundraiser and a powerful advocate who shares his personal story to drive home the importance of the Special Olympics movement. Our athletes are our most effective spokespeople, and Danny is one of the best.”
Our commitment to Special Olympics
We’re committed to supporting our associates and Special Olympics athletes in the states where we operate. According to Special Olympics Florida, nearly 1,000 athletes are also Publix associates. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the organization offers critical health screenings and life-changing leadership opportunities that allow individuals to develop physical fitness, experience joy and demonstrate courage.
Since 1993, Publix has held an annual register campaign to raise awareness and funds for the organization across the southeastern U.S. This year, customers and associates helped raise nearly $4 million to help athletes train and compete in Special Olympics events, bringing the total contributions to more than $85 million since 1993.
