Publix Imported Aged Cheddar Cheese
Publix’s private-label Imported Aged Cheddar Cheese is a great example of sourcing products in a sustainable way.
This cheese is made at a farm that takes pride in being environmentally friendly. They use the latest cutting equipment to reduce product waste and recover 90% of the water used during the cheesemaking process so it can be reused.
The farm also supports wildlife conservation by putting up insect hotels for bees and wasps, and bird boxes to encourage a variety of bird species to nest on the farm. They also focus on responsible rainwater drainage on their property and tree plantings.
Customers who buy this product can enjoy the taste of this well-rounded, smooth and creamy cheese and know they are doing their part for the environment at the same time.
Making sustainable seafood a priority
Offering customers more sustainable seafood options is a priority at Publix. By working with organizations like Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), Publix is taking this a step further by funding projects and programs that help find more sustainable options for seafood fisheries around the world.
One of the projects Publix is supporting is focused on reducing bycatch, which is when unintended fish and wildlife get caught in fishing gear. Another one of the project’s goals is to cut down on entanglement in fishing gear. This includes endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale. As whales travel through the ocean, they can get caught in fishing gear, such as the gear used to catch crab and lobster.
Publix is working with SFP to test, purchase and implement on-demand gear in the United States and Canadian crab and lobster fisheries. This innovative gear reduces the risk of entanglement by removing the rope and buoy system and instead using Bluetooth technology to locate and retrieve traps.
Publix is also focused on giving customers the information they need to make informed seafood-buying decisions. Customers can use our product labels and sustainability icons to learn more about the origin of the seafood they’re purchasing and whether it’s sustainably sourced.
