Harvest Food Group has announced a voluntary recall in conjunction with McCain Foods USA, Inc.’s own recall of all products manufactured at its facility in Colton, CA because both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella have been discovered in that facility. The Path of Life Southwest Quinoa contains an ingredient that Harvest Food Group sourced from McCain Foods USA’s Colton Facility. Harvest Food Group, Inc. has received no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of this product to date. Consumers who have purchased this product are being advised not to consume it and return it to the store where it was originally purchased for a full refund.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant woman.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
